Cannabis is a diverse substance which can be consumed in many ways, and users spend a large amount of time experimenting with different methods to discover what they like.
We’ve seen it all at Neverland OG Dispensary, and prospective customers come into our store asking for many products and services.
We love being able to satisfy the needs of any enthusiast who walks through our doors, and in recent years, cannabis edibles have re-emerged as a popular trend within the community.
Today, there are countless THC and CBD products created specifically for being eaten, so here is what you need to know before you try cannabis edibles.
What are edibles?
Obviously the word ‘edible’ just refers to anything that can be eaten. All foods are of course ‘edible’, but in popular culture, the term refers to foods containing marijuana and cannabis.
The active ingredient in edibles is still THC, the psycho-active cannabinoid agent found in the leaves, flowers, seeds and stems of marijuana plants.
To infuse THC into edibles, plants are diffused into ‘extracts’, but edibles can also contain extracts from other narcotics (which you won’t be able to find on our shelves)!
As edibles are regular foods adjusted to include cannabis extracts, edibles popularly take the form of cookies, brownies, ice-cream, gummies and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
Edibles compared to other methods of cannabis consumption can be easily flavoured, and the strength of the dosage can be controlled through adding less THC extract to the mixture.
Do edibles affect you differently?
Compared to traditional methods of consuming cannabis (e.g. smoking), edibles are reported to affect users very differently.
When you ingest cannabis smoke, the THC (and CBD) enters your body through your lungs and bloodstream.
These chemical compounds are then passed onto your brain, which is what impacts your cognitive functioning and gives you the feeling of being high.
While edibles still result in THC entering the bloodstream, it occurs through a different process, instead being processed by your stomach and liver.
Because the THC is processed in your liver, it is changed into a chemical form different from when you are smoking.
Edibles reportedly give users more intense highs compared to smoking, and while they can take longer to affect you, they tend to leave you higher for longer.
Things to consider
Edibles have a range of benefits for users, such as they are easier to consume discreetly, eating cannabis is not as painful as smoking it, and the high tends to feel more relaxing.
While studies have not researched the difference between smoking and eating cannabis, it is known that consuming too much THC can be toxic for the user.
As it is easier to eat lots of edibles before you begin to feel high, it is more likely for over-consumption to occur.
Overconsumption may lead to negative symptoms, both mental and physical, such as nausea and psychosis.
To avoid this possibility, start by eating an edible with a low dosage of THC, then set a timer for 90-120 minutes.
This practice will ensure you give the product plenty of time to begin taking effect, minimising your chances of accidentally overdosing.
Some people, instead of taking larger doses, prefer to take many ‘micro’ doses, where they eat edibles throughout the day to help them relax without experiencing intense symptoms.
